I’ve never quite understood the “reverence” behind Memorial Day. I mean, I get the whole remembering people and loved ones that have passed but I what I don’t get the fervent zealotry that people in this goddamn country possess for the military. It blows my fucking mind actually. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t “hate America”. However, I do fucking hate America and it’s the America that people blindly jump behind. The America that shines unto the world in a blinding flash of self-righteous indignation; proudly proclaiming its superiority to all of those countries “beneath us”.
“Capitalism works! It is the savior of this world!”
“Our Democracy works! We shall bring it unto ye blind savages of the world!”
I blame Teddy Roosevelt. If you know anything about American history of the 20th century, you know that Roosevelt had this thing called the Roosevelt Corollary. It expanded upon the Monroe doctrine and essentially told the Eastern side of the world that they had to stay the fuck out of the Western hemisphere and that we were gonna police the fucking world. Seems to me, given the sordid history of Central and South America that this was just to help with the rape and pillage of those “primitive countries”. (Let me just add that this is mere speculation but makes sense to me)
I see nothing wrong with taking pride in one’s own country and enjoying where you live. I enjoy the shit out of this country. From the people that I am surrounded by to the ridiculously beautiful landscapes that I have the pleasure to take in. However, I can’t get past the fucked up politics and policies that this country has followed and the main component used in enforcing these policies has been the military. I can respect the fight that that birthed this country and those that fought it but the military action that has taken place over the last 150 or so years has not been to protect this country. It has been to further the interests of men who want nothing more than money and power. It sickens and enrages me to my core. When I see the stream of garbage online of sycophants who thank the military for protecting us, my hope for humanity becomes smaller and smaller. It’s soul crushing and it becomes harder and harder to keep going. However, a lesson that I have fully come to understand in the last few months is the only thing that keeps me going and that is, “what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger”….or stranger if your sociopathic tendencies are taking over.
Peace, love and self-loathing.
